THE STARTER REPORTED: a) SMILEY RIVER (*J R Syster) was slow into stride. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: a) Approaching the 300m, MASAAKEN (AUS) (*K A Brewer) was brushed in by BEFORE NOON (C Habib) which shifted in to avoid running onto the heels of AUGUST LEAVES (C Zackey) which had come to the end of its run. b) Jockey M Yeni reported that PAYBACKTHEMONEY (M Yeni) did not stride out freely in running and did not persevere with this riding in the concluding stages. The Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine this gelding. c)Apprentice J R Syster was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking SMILEY RIVER more than twelve times in the entire race. Apprentice Syster signed an Admission of Guilt and was fined R1500. When assessing the penalty, the Board took into consideration the number of times Apprentice Syster used his crop (14) as well as his recent record with regard to this Rule and Guideline (4). d) MASAAKEN (AUS) (*K A Brewer), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis.
