THE STARTER REPORTED: a) Fair start. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) At approximately the 900m, MASTER ARCHIE (G Lerena) had to steady momentarily when awkwardly placed on the heels of AMBIORIX (M Yeni) which rolled in. Jockey M Yeni appeared before the Board with regard to this incident and was advised to ensure that he provides sufficient clearance to other runners in future. b) WILLIAM ROBERTSON (S Khumalo) was hanging out from the 400m. c) When questioned regarding his riding of BARZALONA, Jockey A Domeyer told the Stewards that this gelding had a relatively short run-in to the finish and that as per his riding in its previous races, he had asked BARZALONA for a finishing effort at a late stage of the Race to enable it to close its race off strongly. Mr Domeyer further elaborated that if this gelding is asked to sustain an effort too early in the race, it would weaken and not close off strongly. The Stewards noted Jockey Domeyer's explanation and advised him nevertheless, to ride his mounts with sufficient vigour and purpose so as to leave no room for query wherever circumstance permits. d) When questioned regarding his riding of FAUSTINO, Jockey M Mjokwa told the Stewards that this gelding had raced too freely in the early stages of the race and despite his attempts to settle the gelding, it had taken hold of the bit and had dictated a pace which was not sustainable and had raced in advance of the field. He added that the gelding had weakened badly shortly after entering the straight which was to be expected when considering the early exertions of the gelding. He attributed this gelding's racing manners to the fitment of the blinkers for today's race and had advised the Trainer to remove this equipment for its next races over similar distances. The Stewards noted this explanation. e) Trainer C Spies signed an admission of guilt for a contravention of Rule 8.3.1, in that he failed to ensure that the owners' colours were available for the horse WILLIAM ROBERTSON. Accordingly, a penalty of a warning was imposed. f) WILLIAM ROBERTSON (S Khumalo), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer C Spies advised (NS). g) MASTER ARCHIE (G Lerena), placed second, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer P A Peter advised (LB).
