Stipes Report
THE STARTER REPORTED: a) MONTANA SKY (B Jacobson) and QUEST FOR THE BEST (M Mjoka) were restless in the stalls. b) FLYING VISION (S Veale) lost 2 lengths. c) WINTER WAVES (S Moodley) lost 1 length. d) ROCKY COAST (A Arries) lost 3 lengths. THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED : a) Apprentice R Venniker (SONJADOR) dropped her crop at the 200m. b) MONTANA SKY (B Jacobson) and ROCKY COAST (A Arries) came together and brushed in the concluding stages. c) In view of the performances of TUK TUK (D Dillon) (9.50 lengths, 6/1 in the betting) and SONJADOR (*R Venniker) (18.75 lengths, 25/2 in the betting) the Veterinary Surgeon was requested to examine. d) Jockey M Mjoka appeared before the Board and was questioned regarding the change of tactics on QUEST FOR THE BEST. In this regard, he explained that after this gelding had jumped well, his intent was to secure the position in front of MONTANA SKY (B Jacobson), however due to the manner in which the race developed, it resulted in him obtaining a more forward position than he had anticipated. He further explained that in order for him to mitigate this positioning, he elected to race at his own pace and leave a wider margin between himself and the runners in front of him than ordinarily would have been the case. The Board noted this explanation and specifically drew his attention to the form of this gelding when being required to race in a forward position in its career. In this regard, Jockey M Mjoka explained that after obtaining the position that he did at the early stage of the race, he was unable to ride QUEST FOR THE BEST similarly as in its previous runs. Trainer D Howells appeared before the Board regarding this matter and explained that his instructions were for this gelding to be ridden "cold" and confirmed that this was not the case in the running. The Board noted the explanations of Jockey M Mjoka and Trainer D Howells and will monitor the running style of QUEST FOR THE BEST going forward. e) WHITE CEDAR (S Khumalo), the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer G Rich advised (HM). JOCKEY / EQUIPMENT CHANGES : a) SEA SPONGE raced equipped with blinkers (advised 04.01.22/20h41). b) FOREST JUMP was ridden by Jockey K de Melo.
