Stipes Report

THE STARTER REPORTED:

a)	CRAFTY HEART (R Munger) was stubborn loading.
b)	MAIDEN'S COVE (M Mjoka) jumped slow, losing one length.
c)	OPERA SWING (D Ashby) was slow into stride.

THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED: 
 
a)	After the running of Race 7, certain riders expressed concern that lightning close to the track may be a source of danger. The Stewards consulted with the Racing Operators' Representative and the Track Manager, both of whom had been monitoring the storm that had been passing in the vicinity of the racetrack. Both were of the opinion that the lightning had at no stage been close enough to the racecourse to be of concern and a decision was made to reschedule Race 8 until 17h00 to allow the storm to subside and continue with the race meeting. Jockey S Khumalo disagreed with this decision and sought permission from the Stewards to be stood down from his remaining engagement. The Stewards acceded to his request and, as there was no other rider available, BASETSANA was withdrawn.
b)	Rain fell during the running of this race.
c)	Shortly after the start MANSOORIYA (J Mphanya) was brushed on the hindquarters by MAIGURU (JP van der Merwe), which was carried out marginally by CRAFTY HEART (R Munger).
d)	Jockey D Ashby was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Guideline M on the use of the crop) in that he misused his crop by striking OPERA SWING more than 12 times in the entire race. Jockey D Ashby signed an admission of guilt and was fined R1000,00. In determining penalty, the Board took into account the distance over and manner in which Jockey D Ashby used his crop and the number of strikes (13) over the permissible level. 
e)	RIVER CAFE, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer GD Smith was advised (LM).
