Stipes Report

THE STARTER REPORTED:

a)	RASCOVA (G Lerena) was restless in the stalls and kicked the back gates.
b)	LAVENDER BAY (S Moodley) was slow into stride.

THE STIPENDIARY STEWARDS REPORTED:

a)	Shortly after the start DOUBLE GRAND SLAM (R Fourie) and WORLD OF ALICE (S Veale) were steadied and taken in behind runners
b)	At the 100m, Jockey S Veale (WORLD OF ALICE) hesitated with his riding when tightened for galloping room between the inside running rail and SILVER SANCTUARY (O Murphy).
c)	RED PALACE (C Zackey) was hanging out from the 250m.
d)	When questioned regarding his riding of LAVENDER BAY, Jockey S Moodley told the Stewards that his instructions were to obtain a forward position on this filly, with a strong pace. After being slow away, he had been obliged to ride the filly forward and she had commenced to over race. He decided that instead of restraining her, he would allow her to race freely and obtain the lead using her action. When it was put to him that she had raced well clear of the rest of the field in the middle stages, he replied that he was not aware of how far she had cleared the field and that, in his opinion, she had obtained this comfortable lead with relative ease. Jockey Moodley was further questioned if he had felt that the filly had been in a position to close the race off strongly in the home straight. He responded that she had commenced to tire shortly after straightening. Jockey Moodley was advised that the patrol film was consistent with his evidence. However, he was advised that he should desist with any crop use on a horse which is giving ground and that when circumstances permit, he should comply with reasonable instructions given to him regarding the way he rides his horses but at the same time, consider his obligation to ride his mounts in such a manner to benefit its bests interests of the race in general, in terms of the Rules.
e)	DOUBLE GRAND SLAM, the winner, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer SJ Snaith was advised. (KG)
f)	RED PALACE, the second-placed horse, was selected for the taking of specimens for analysis. Trainer DM Kannemeyer was advised. (TL)
